By EU legislation soldier fly larvae are considered a suitable feed material to all intents and purposes.

For the animal world

Its composition percentage in protein (ca. 40%), fat (ca. 30%) and fibre (ca. 10%) makes it a very suitable product for the formulation of diets for farm animals and pets.

BEF Biosystems has conducted, and continues to carry out, trials integrating live larvae into the feed of laying hens, which have shown good preliminary results in terms of animal welfare and the quality of eggs produced; tests with larvae in pig feed are also underway.

The advantages of live larvae

It is a valuable food that ensures animal welfare by providing benefits from the nutritional standpoint without undermining growth performance.

In poultry farming, live larvae reduce stress in the hens, improve their plumage and enable them to reach marketable egg size more quickly.

Live larvae have also been tested with excellent results as an environmental enrichment to facilitate piglet weaning. Their introduction positively influenced the behaviour of piglets after weaning, ensuring optimal results in terms of animal growth and feed and energy efficiency.

Live larvae are also used to feed wild animals at rescue centres and by enthusiasts who keep ornamental birds, reptiles and amphibians as pets
