The larvae of the soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) are reared worldwide as a source of protein that can be used in domestic animal feeds, in aquaculture and in pig and poultry farming. Insect breeding also yields soil improvers for agriculture and derivatives for the chemical industry.

The use of insects in feeds is a highly sustainable way of producing animal protein, due to the low consumption of resources entailed, extremely low CO2 emissions from the production processes, reduced water consumption.

The European Union supports the breeding of these larvae because they can be cultivated using many types of organic, agricultural and food residues, giving rise to a virtuous process of circular economy. In recent years, the Commission has issued several regulatory acts, paving the way for the development of the sector.

Since 2017, specific regulations have been approved on the use of insect derivatives in the feeding of fish, pets, chickens and pigs.

Recently, the sale of products for human consumption made from edible insect species has been authorised under certain conditions.

At present, only vegetable by-products and residues, together with eggs and dairy products, may be used for the feeding of larvae, and the use of materials classified as waste is ruled out.

Knowing full well that any innovation in the food sector must be addressed with caution and in strict compliance with the regulations, at BEF we have placed collaboration with public bodies in charge of controlling hygiene and health procedures and quality at the heart of our method of working.

Our first Bugsfarm, in the province of Alessandria, was also created thanks to an important contribution provided by the Piedmont Region under the SC-UP call funded by Regional Operational Programme (ROP) ERDF 2014/2020 action I.1b.4.1.

The breeding system has been validated by the relevant Local Health Unit and the Municipality and adheres to all good breeding practices as per Regulation (EC) 183/2005 (feed hygiene) and Regulation (EC) 852/2004 (HACCP).

Since 2019, we have been collaborating with Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Lazio e della Toscana in research studies aimed at verifying the suitability of insect-based feed for poultry farms.
